Depression


Depression can be defined as feeling of sadness, mood disorder or anger due to some changes in person’s life or routine activity.

Depression is very common these days as according to an estimation 8.1 percent people in America over age 20 had depression. People experience depression in their daily work, in relationships and some health conditions. Health conditions can get worse due to depression as:

·   Asthma

·   Obesity

·   Cancer

·   Diabetes

 

Types:

It is categorized in two types:

1.   Major depressive disorder

It is a severe type of depression in which you can feel helplessness and worthless continuously.

There are many symptoms of this disorder but you must have 5 or more to be diagnosed by this disorder.

·   Worthlessness

·   Slow thinking/movement

·   Loss of interest

·   Fatigue

·   Feeling low most of day

·   Sleeping more

·   Weight loss

·   Thinking about death or suicide

2.   Persistent depressive disorder

It is lighter but long term depression also called dysthymia. This type of disorder affect your life more than major disorder. The symptoms of this disorder are:

·   Less productivity

·   Low self esteem

·   Hopelessness

·   Lose interest in daily activities

 

Symptoms:

Major depression has many symptoms. Some symptoms can be continuous and some can come time to time which can affect your body, emotions, mood and behavior.

Symptoms of depression are different in men women and children.

In Men:

       Men experience symptoms related to their mood, behavior, sexual interest, emotions, sleep patterns and physical disorder.

In Women:

       Women like men also experience symptoms related to emotions, weight loss, Fatigue, difficulty in sleep, mood and behavior.

 

In Children:

         Children feel loneliness, Incompetence, anger, refuse going to school or having problems in school, feel difficult to sleep, loss of appetite etc. 

 

Diagnosing:

There are no specific tests to diagnose depression. Your doctor or consultant can only identify it by asking relevant question about your mood, diet, weight loss, activities, sleep pattern etc.

Your doctor/ consultant will also perform some physical test as depression can lead to some serious medical issues. That is why one should not ignore symptoms of depression it can cause:

·   Panic attacks

·   Social problems

·   Problems in relationships

·   Isolation

·   Self-harm

·   Weight gain or loss

 

Causes:

 

Causes of depression can be biological or circumstantial.

Common causes of depression are:

·   Depression can come in genes. There are high chances of depression if you have a family history of depression.

·   If you are having any medical issue or experiencing some serious disease than it can lead to depression.

·   Your personality can be another cause of depression if you feel lonely, worry a lot or have low self-esteem.

·   Any kind of childhood trauma like fear to something can also cause depression.

·   History of misusing alcohol or drugs also lead to depression

·   Depression can also cause due to brain structure that is if your frontal lobe is less active. But scientists are unable to find that why this happen.

In many cases your doctors or consultants are unable to detect the causes of depressions

Treatment:

Life with depression is so hard but it can be cured with one treatment or combination of treatments.

The most common treatments that can be prescribed by your consultant are:

·   Your healthcare will prescribed medication which includes antidepressant,

Antianxiety and antipsychotic medicines. But this type of treatment has both benefits and side effects.

·   You can have a psychotherapy by consulting to a psychiatrist or you can join any social group and talking to them you can get rid of negative feelings.

·   Light therapy is very effective in major depressive disorder as exposure of white light improve your mood swings and you feel relaxed.

·   Endorphins are hormones that boost your mood and you feel refresh. By 30 minutes of exercise in 5 days a week you can enhance the productivity of these hormones.

·   Avoid drinking alcohol and using drugs as they can make you feel better for a short time but in a long term they can cause worst effects.

·   Depression can also be healed/cured by taking good care of yourself as you experience positive vibes. Take good sleep, eat healthy and avoid negative people or activities.

·   Overwhelming emotions are another cause of depression so you need to set boundaries in your life and relations and learn to say  ”no” in your personal and professional life.
